10 Smiles for May 1st

  1. A clean tub and toilet.
  2. Spending 30 minutes in the tub
  3. Spending 30 minutes in the tub
  4. Spending 30 minutes in the tub.  This is not a mistake, I was in there for an HOUR AND A HALF.  It was *glorious.*  Thank you, Lee, for the bathbomb.
  5. Repairing the dishwasher.  This would have been easier if the people who always return my tools actually returned my tools, so I could have used a Phillips instead of a flat.  Amnesty is being offered in exchange for miraculous reappearance in the toolbox, peeps.  Make it happen.
  6. Figuring out what was wrong with my washer.  It just doesn’t want to extended spin.  This was simple enough, I just needed time to actually watch what the machine did and think about it.  Oops, that didn’t work as well as I thought.
  7. Setting up a third interview.  I am pretending I like the interview, but what I actually like is that this interview moves me forward on my goal.
  8. Setting up a baking center in the kitchen.
  9. Making maple-pecan peasant bread for an after-school snack.
  10. Holding my tongue.
  11. Finally having an empty coffee canister so I could empty and clean the deep fryer!

And Sour Cream rolls. I started with 3 cups of sour cream and 3 cups of self-rising flour. Once that was mixed, I added more flour until the dough felt right, probably about a cup in small increments. Bake at 425 for 20ish minutes. So good served hot with butter!

April 3, In Which We Buy Cheese

image

Do you see the price on this cheese? $12.99 for 8.8 ounces. Diva needed it for a recipe, because Halloumi doesn’t melt when heated. Nod. This made me think about the cost of food. Diva is a fine cook. No, really, she’s quite good. But when Diva cooks, it can run upwards of fifty bucks. When I cook it’s about twenty. If I go “cheap,” I can skate out for ten. Doing the math, I need to cook “cheap” three times for each time Diva cooks. Clearly, she and I need to have a discussion about budgetary constraints in the kitchen.

February 3-5, In Which We Do Some Stuff

Yeah, I know I had a good habit going on here. And I remember every day that I need to blog, but this is the first time I have been home (almost) on time in …a long time. SO let’s just catch up, shall we?

February 3rd, I watched the Superbowl, along with everyone else in America. IMO, Beyoncé sucked.

February 4th, I wore some clothes.

And because it was Monday, I sat in the library between classes and did homework. I also had a chocolate mocha latte and a brownie. It was delicious.

February 5th, I also wore clothes.

And made the most amazing beef stew ever.

best stew ever

Beef stew begins with browning the meat in bacon drippings.
Plus one packet onion soup mix.
Plus one large can cream of mushroom soup.
Plus one jar of mild salsa.
Plus the remainder of a small jar of minced garlic.
Plus six potatoes, peeled and large diced.
Plus a few green onions.
Plus half a bell pepper.
Plus one yellow onion.
Plus a pound of frozen peas.
Plus a half-poundish of green butter beans.
Final steps: Adding cheese to some crescent rolls and putting them in to bake; turning off the burner and ripping the leaves off a bunch of parsley and stirring them into the stew.

Sorry, no aluminum angle, I used my new pot!

January 26, In Which We Rearrange and Risotto

So. I had a dilemma. I was really enjoying my new room set-up, except for one thing. People would get ready to walk through to the bathroom and peep around the door to see what I was doing. I didn’t like that at all. I know they have to come through to the bathroom, but…that little head tilted checking out what I was doing bugged me. And yet it is important to me to make my home welcoming to my daughter’s friends. (And yes, some of her friends I also call friend.) So I re-arranged.

When I am in my bed, I can no longer be seen from the door. And I figure if I still feel voyeured, I can add a couple of tall bookcases at the foot of the bed to block myself in further. This had the unexpected added benefits of both enlarging my office space and allowing me to add a second night stand. Woohoo. Yes, I know I have an obscene amount of pillows. Get over it.

I am still practicing risotto. Tonight’s version was made with beef. I over-corrected on the salt, but lowered the heat and came much closer to the desired texture. I still could have used more broth. I think I need to measure the capacity of my ladle–it apparently holds less than the half cup I am assuming.

Christmas Vakay Days Six and Seven

This…is all the mess that’s left from re-doing my room. I consolidated it on Day Six. Will I finish it before school starts again? No, because I also need to sort through all the cubbies. Will I make progress on it? Definately!

I also made progress on my scarf.  I thought I had it finished, but it rolls.  Gah, I hate that, so I am attempting to fix it.  Also, it is more suitable for a man than for me. Not quite sure what I am going to do with it. Anybody out there needing some hand-knit love?

Aaaaaand I started The History of Love: A Novel. It is beautiful.

Today, Day Seven, I visited with a friend, cleaned my kitchen and cooked. It was delicious. Fried chicken, rice, gravy, potato salad, rutabagas, green butter beans. I sang and danced in the kitchen while I did that. It was this year’s version of Christmas Dinner. Bittersweet.
